Contact models for very loose granular materials

چکیده

One challenge of todays research on particle systems is the realistic simulation of granular materials consisting of many thousands of particles with peculiar contact interactions. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD, also called discrete element method, DEM) is introduced for the simulation of many-particle systems. A wide class of realistic contact models is presented, involving dissipation, adhesion, plastic deformation, friction, rollingand torsion resistance. The effect of the contact properties on a simple compaction test is discussed with the goal to achieve as small as possible packing densities. With contact forces only, packing volume fractions down to 0.42 can be achieved, while somewhat longer ranged adhesion forces allow for volume fractions as low as 0.34.

Force Transmission Modes of Non-Cohesive and Cohesive Materials at the Critical State

This paper investigates the force transmission modes, mainly described by probability density distributions, in non-cohesive dry and cohesive wet granular materials by discrete element modeling. The critical state force transmission patterns are focused on with the contact model effect being analyzed. By shearing relatively dense and loose dry specimens to the critical state in the conventional...

Mechanical Simulation of Granular Materials by DEM Analysis

A study of four constitutive contact models employed in discrete element analysis is presented. Most discrete element simulations employ simple contact models due to computational time constraints. However, few works are available in literature which evaluates the suitability of these simple models to simulate DEM applications. The influence of more complex models on bulk behavior is examined t...

SEISMIC BEHAVIOR OF SILOS WITH DIFFERENT HEIGHT TO DIAMETER RATIOS CONSIDERING GRANULAR MATERIAL-STRUCTURE INTERACTION

Silos are structures that are used for storing different types of granular material. Dynamic behavior of silos under seismic loads is very complex. In this paper seismic behavior of steel silos with different height to diameter ratios is investigated by considering granular material-structure interaction using ABAQUS finite element package. Silo wall is modeled by shell elements and its behavio...

Multiscale ‘tomography-to-simulation’ framework for granular matter: the road ahead

A roadmap is presented to transition seamlessly from an image to a predictive computational model for granular materials. So far, constitutive modelling in granular materials has been based on macroscopic experimental observations. Here, the point of departure is the basic granular scale where kinematics, contact forces and fabric control the macroscopic mechanical behaviour of the material. Ne...
